Letter from the President

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
It is with great pleasure that I invite you to join us for the 18th annual meeting of the American Society of Functional Neuroradiology (ASFNR), taking place from September 18-21 in vibrant Austin, Texas.
As the youngest among the subspecialty societies of the ASNR, ASFNR is proud to be a hub of innovation in neuroradiology. This year, our meeting theme, "Advanced neuroimaging beyond fMR/BOLD imaging," reflects our commitment to staying at the cutting edge of the field and involve advanced physiologic and metabolic imaging modalities beyond BOLD imaging.
We've come a long way since the days when functional MRI was synonymous with task-based BOLD imaging, and this year’s meeting will showcase the vision of our organization to include all advanced neuro-imaging techniques with an eye on the future. Our 2025 program will cover essential topics in new areas such as artificial intelligence, metabolic imaging including PET, focused ultrasound, brain-computer interfaces, and the latest software developments in neuroimaging apart from BOLD and perfusion imaging.
We would also like to continue expanding our sessions focusing on trainee education and their involvement in the meeting program by planning a special boot-camp session for trainees focusing on advanced imaging modalities.
Highlights of the program include:
-
Pre-meeting hands-on workshops (expanded program with new workshop topics as well as increased vendor involvement)
-
A case-based boot-camp session for hands-on skill-building especially geared towards trainees
-
A lively Point-Counterpoint debate tackling controversial issues in neuroradiology
-
Tabletop breakout sessions designed for in-depth discussions on recent talks
We’re thrilled to have exceptional keynote speakers this year (stay tuned for more details!), and there will be ample opportunities for networking, socializing, and building lasting connections – from our Opening Reception to the Member-In-Training gathering, JEDI panel, and more.
In your free time, immerse yourself in all that Austin has to offer. Known for its vibrant music scene, world-class dining, and beautiful outdoor spaces, Austin has something for everyone. Explore scenic Lady Bird Lake, stroll down South Congress, or try some of the city’s renowned barbecue and local brews. Austin’s unique blend of culture and charm makes it an exciting city to visit.
We look forward to welcoming you to ASFNR 2025!
Warm regards,
Rajan Jain, MD
President-Elect & Program Chair

ASFNR 2025 Pre-Conference Workshops
Increase your knowledge and hone technical skills at ASFNR's pre-conference workshops! This year we're offering three optional workshops for attendees to choose from:
BOLD fMRI
This full day workshop provides didactic and hands-on experience with clinical fMRI, including task-based language and motor mapping, as well as an introduction to resting-state fMRI. The aim of the workshop is to equip attendees with the foundation to begin or enhance their own clinical fMRI program.
COURSE DIRECTORS:
Erik Middlebrooks, MD | Mayo Clinic Florida
Vince Kumar, MD | University of Texas, MD Anderson
Perfusion Imaging
This full-day workshop will cover applications of perfusion imaging related to stroke and neuro-oncology.
During the first half of the workshop, we will review the basic techniques of CT perfusion and MRI perfusion techniques such as dynamic susceptibility contrast and arterial spin labeling , as they pertain to acute ischemic stroke. In the second half, we will do a deep dive into the application of perfusion imaging in neuro-oncology.
COURSE DIRECTORS:
Vivek Yedavalli, MD | Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
Amit Desai, MD | Mayo Clinic
PET-MRI
This half-day workshop provides practical didactic and hands-on experience with clinical PET-MRI, including use of surface and blended images for the enhanced diagnosis of different neurological diseases. Attendees will gain familiarity with the indications, advantages and imaging appearance of PET studies for dementia, epilepsy and other diseases through a case-based review with experts.
COURSE DIRECTORS:
Timothy Shepherd, MD, PhD | NYU Langone
Maria Rosana Ponisio, MD | Washington University School of Medicine
