John L. Ulmer Translational Trainee Award

The ASFNR John L. Ulmer Translational Trainee Award was created to honor the memory of John L. Ulmer. Dr. Ulmer was a Professor of Radiology and the Chief of Neuroradiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Ulmer was a physician scientist with a passion for education and clinical translation of advanced neuroimaging techniques to the clinical practice. As such, the ASFNR John L. Ulmer Award is meant for a trainee (neuroradiology fellow, radiology resident, medical student) and to reward a research project that will contributed to the clinical translation of an advanced neuroimaging techniques.



  • Applicant must be a neuroradiology fellow, a radiology resident, or a medical student.

  • Applicant must be mentored by an ASFNR member in good standing.

  • Applicants should be ASFNR Members-in-Training (This membership is free. Please apply here.)

  • Published or previously presented works should NOT be submitted.



  • Applicant should submit an abstract for the Annual ASFNR meeting.

  • Applicant should indicate that they are interested in applying for the ASFNR John L. Ulmer Translational Trainee Award when prompted to do so during the abstract application process.

  • The applications will be reviewed by the ASFNR Research Committee.

  • The Awardee will be informed 1 month prior to the Annual meeting.

  • The Awardee will receive his Award during the Welcome Reception during the Annual Meeting.

Award will consist of:

  • Reimbursement of meeting registration

  • Reimbursement of flight up to $700

  • Reimbursement of hotel stay for the duration of the ASFNR meeting

  • A check of $500
